Is it possible that we’re committing idolatry when we worship “God?” Think about it: God said, “Know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other” (Deuteronomy 4:39). Then, Jesus later said, “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him” (John 4:23).
The definition of idolatry is simply worshiping a false god. Therefore, any image, thought, or belief that we have of God that is not congruent with His actual identity and character is false. So, if we’re actually singing and lifting our hands to, worshiping, and obeying this false idea or image of God, then we are committing a very grave sin, idolatry.
